They’re mostly there for the fun of it all rather than to accumulate anything, but every single one of them made me smile, even the few that I had to take a moment to try and guess at. I won’t spoil any more here so as to not rob anyone of the joy of first discovering them. But, much like with the hardware artifacts, every era of PlayStation is represented in some truly hilarious ways. I went into this game expecting it to be nothing more than a quick tech demo, I was very wrong.

Astro’s Playroom was the final game released by Japan Studio before their dissolution in April 2021. Team Asobi was formally spun-off into an independent studio within Sony’s PlayStation Studios in June 2021. They were also much less expensive to manufacture, making it less of a risk to make a small run of games, bolstering the number of more experimental and niche releases on the system. Coins are very common in Astro’s Playroom, and are used as currency. Specifically, they’re used in the PlayStation Labo area to be spent in the Gatcha minigame. Pre-ordering the digital edition comes with the above as well as Astro Bot’s digital artbook and soundtrack. Sony‘s really going all in on the upcoming adventure, and gauging fan response, it’s working wonders.
Ape Escape is notable for being the first PlayStation game to require a Dual Analog/DualShock controller; you couldn’t play it using the launch gamepad. There are a few things that elevate Astro from being just another fun-but-forgettable platformer. I still remember the first time I played Super Mario 64, and how amazed I was that pushing the analog stick slightly would make Mario walk, while a stronger push would make him run. Playing Astro’s Playroom with the DualSense is a similar experience.
The Astro Playroom Trophy List includes 31 bronze‚ 14 silver‚ 5 gold‚ and 1 platinum trophy‚ totaling 51 achievements. Categories range from story completion to collectibles and challenges‚ with some being secret trophies. Earning the Platinum Trophy in Astro Playroom requires unlocking all 46 trophies. With no missable achievements‚ it’s achievable in 5-7 hours‚ making it a fun and accessible platinum.
It also teases that a selection of gatchas, or collectibles that can be earned via an in-game arcade machine, have been added, too. See in action a level of Astro’s Playroom, the platformer that comes free with your PlayStation 5 and shows off the cool new features of the DuelSense controller. You don’t usually see this kind of charm and polish in the genre unless it has Mario’s name attached to it. Granted, Astro isn’t as acrobatic as our favorite Italian plumber. He has a simple move set consisting of a jump, a hover, and some punches. But Astro’s Playroom never feels dull for a second thanks to its unbounded creativity.
@Froggydarren I have been watching DF reviews for a long time now, and still find their framerate analysis to be a god send as anything much less than locked 60fps makes me feel ill – literally. I always thought they missed a big trick here, and should have had Astro bot (the game) reveal the look of the Pro at the end of the game – via some sort of super power up for the mothership. Stand at tr88 nổ hũ of the level and throw the projectile towards it to reveal the location of the bot. First, activate the first two rope bridges by pulling the wires out of the ground. Now, return to the starting area, and to the side, you’ll find another set of wires, which gives you a projectile with a net inside. If done successfully, the Gran Turismo Special Bot and the “Grand Tourist” trophy will unlock.
ASOBI Team from Japan Studio could have just phoned it in with a handful of gimmicky levels to distract players while they wait for Miles Morales or Demon’s Souls to download, but they didn’t. They developed a full fun platforming experience that not only demonstrates the PS5, but celebrates 25 years of PlayStation history in some pretty special ways. It’s a powerful showcase that honors everything that led to the “5” in PS5, while also providing a pretty clear picture of what makes this new generation so special. From a technical presentation, though Astro’s Playroom appears simple and “cartoony” at a glance, there are a number of instances that really highlight features like ray tracing and highly detailed 4K textures. Check out the texture on the inside of the PS5 faceplate in the main CPU plaza. Look at the extraordinary textures and details on the game’s many collectibles.
Been with gamepressure.com since 2019, mostly writing game guides but you can also find me geeking out about LEGO (huge collection, btw). Even with a ton of games, sometimes I just gotta fire up Harvest Moon, Stardew Valley, KOTOR, or Baldur’s Gate 2 (Shadows of Amn, the OG, not that Throne of Bhaal stuff). When I’m not gaming, I’m probably painting miniatures or admiring my collection of retro consoles. Astro’s Playroom guide contains a detailed walkthrough for the game.
Puzzle Piece 4/4 – When you reach the room with the fans blowing downward toward electrical hazards on the floor, this puzzle piece is between an electrified mine and these hazards. Puzzle Piece 2/4 – In this same starting area, go around the back of the rock pillar in the middle of the purple plants to find this puzzle piece. Puzzle Piece 2/4 – At the second hang glider section some rings will appear. You need to launch yourself through the ring on the right to grab this puzzle piece. Puzzle Piece 4/4– In the area you end up in after falling to grab puzzle piece 3, you need to grab the lowest yellow handhold on the wall to make this puzzle piece appear.
This system ensures a smooth progression for players aiming to fully complete the game. Astro’s Playroom imagines that your brand new PlayStation 5 has little chibi robots living inside it. It is also a ridiculously cute tribute to 25 years of PlayStation history, games and hardware, packing in references to literally hundreds of fond PlayStation memories. It will bring out your every buried recollection of PlayStation games and gadgets; at one point I found myself laughing nostalgically at a perfectly rendered recreation of a PS2 camera add-on. Rescuing special bots in Astro Playroom requires solving riddles or performing specific actions in each world. For example‚ punching a bush in the GPU Jungle reveals the Selen bot from Returnal.
