Obviously, what you take away from the story and its diverse cast of characters will be unique to you. On the surface, it’s another thrilling superhero story packed full of surprises, cameos, and Easter eggs – but there are deeper meanings to be found here, too. Overall, there’s slightly less emphasis on stealth encounters this time than in either Spider-Man or Miles Morales. As someone who found the stealth action of the previous games a little simplistic and routine, this new, louder approach is welcome. Spider-Man 2 (PS5) brings back some of the old suits from the previous two games including news suits and outfits for this sequel from vintage suits to what-if scenario costumes.
Gameplay-wise, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is very similar to the series’ previous installments. The fundamental difference is that this time both Peter Parker and Miles Morales are playable. The playable character changes during certain plot points, for example, if one of them isn’t able to arrive somewhere in time or when they need to split up. The only villains we get are Kraven, Venom, Sandman, The Lizard, and Mysterio (kind of). They set up The Chameleon and Carnage but they don’t actually do anything. And that’s not even mentioning side characters like Silver Sable who easily could’ve returned in some capacity.
Still, while he may have mastered his fighting skills, Peter still struggles to balance his personal life and his life as a crime-fighter. The book leads directly into the events of Marvel’s Spider-Man, first introducing Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin, as he returns to New York, only this time he’s built himself a pretty sturdy reputation as an altruistic entrepreneur and philanthropist. Now you can build up height and speed with web-swinging before quickly switching to Web Wings to glide in areas like Queens, where there are few tall buildings. With the new interactive elements like super slingshots and wind tunnels that act as jet streams, Spider-Man has never been faster in the air.

On PS5 in 2023, Spider-Man 2 at least served as an impressive technical showcase for the hardware, and a blockbuster release in a relatively quiet release schedule.

On top of that, it’s expected to set the scene ahead of the game’s arrival, giving us further insight into what Peter, Miles, and MJ have all been getting up to since their last appearance. On the other hand, Spider-Man 2’s version of New York is also expanding into Queens where we’ll be able to swing around Peter’s home borough, and maybe even visit some iconic locations from his past. As well as this, Scott Porter – who voiced Harry Osborn in the first Spider-Man game – confirmed that the character will be appearing in the sequel. In a now-deleted tweet, the actor revealed that, while the character will be coming back, he will not be lending his voice to the role. Venom also appeared for a brief moment in the reveal trailer, and again in the more recent Story Trailer too.
The release date for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was announced at Summer Game Fest 2023 by Insomniac Games. The webslinger’s next adventure arrives on PlayStation 5 on October 20, 2023.
