The main story has that mix of slick but very linear action setpieces and quiet character moments common to almost all the modern PlayStation first-party titles—outside of those, the city is scattered with optional side missions and things to find. I can’t say that I noticed one dropped frame in my dozens of hours of playing. This allows Spider-Man 2 to shine in its most jaw-dropping moments – of which the main story offers many – as explosive action, sparkling electrical effects, and fittingly slimy symbiote gloop fill the screen. The main story took me around 18 hours to complete before I hit 100%, and the subsequent platinum trophy popped up to congratulate my efforts after 27 in total. Despite whatever loftier ambitions the story may have, this is still unapologetically an old-school approach to open-world game design, and nowhere is this displayed more clearly than in its optional quests.
Even with Miles Morales swinging into action with Peter Parker, the two wallcrawlers will find themselves in the hunter’s crosshairs as Kraven brings his small army with him to New York. Kraven has hunted some of the most incredible prey the world has to offer and against two webslinging Super Heroes, the ultimate hunter-hunted game is about to unfold, with nowhere safe to hide. Bursting on the scene in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (1963) #47, Kraven the Hunter was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko.
Spider-Man 2 is officially swinging to PC on January 30, 2025, making it the latest PlayStation exclusive to make its way to Steam and Epic Games Store. Nixxes Software, which worked on porting the two previous Spider-Man games, will once again handle development. During af88 com in which players take control of MJ and attempt to free Dr. Connors before he is forced to transform into The Lizard, players locate many of the villains’ belongings that were taken by Kraven after he killed them. One of the different tables features Electro’s suit, along with a recording left behind by Kraven discussing his hunt with Electro.
Peter acts as Miles’ mentor and gets to exist firmly in a space where the movies (interested only in the drama) and the comics (interested only in sadism) have always refused to let him be. He’s got a healthy, functional relationship with Mary Jane Watson, a burgeoning reporter for the Daily Bugle, and although he’s struggling to maintain a job, he’s relatively well adjusted… for now. Kraven is one of the main bad guys in Spider-Man 2, other than Venom, of course.
The ropiness of this PC port is a sad addition to the issues, resulting in a flawed version of an already flawed sequel. My hope for this sequel was that with the core action already perfected, there would be the space to improve on the wider formula, creating a more interesting New York playground. Instead, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 simply has more stuff—a bigger story, more pointless collectibles, sprawling skill trees, and double the Spider-Men.
Marvel’s Spider-man 2: All Editions, Prices & Pre-order Bonuses Explained
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 also gave Sony the advantage in the console wars, with Xbox failing to compete with such big names. Although there were franchises for Xbox to call upon that would give it an edge in the battle, Sony had a couple of more heavy hitters. The PlayStation 5 is currently far ahead of its major competitor, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has to be given some of the credit for that as a much-advertised exclusive. Indeed, even today, despite the fact the game has been available for some time, Sony still uses the Insomniac release to promote its slate of titles and the capabilities of the console overall. During the Roll Like We Used To main story mission, as a younger Peter Parker explores Midtown High, you’ll be crawling through air vents when Peter will find a webbed-up backpack of his. He’ll remark that he needs to “start keeping track” of them so they aren’t misplaced – a tongue in cheek reference to the Backpack collectibles throughout the city in Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018).
Bodega Cat Suit
This could be jarring at times, but fortunately, the new update will let players swap between the tendril colors to better match their chosen suits. After the devastation left in the wake of Sandman’s rampage in the opening sequence of the game, a fair portion of the city remains sand-covered and battle-damaged for the duration of the story. You’ll spot Damage Control banners dotted around, which is a company from the comics that specializes in repairing the property damage caused by conflicts between superheroes and villains.
Spider-man Explained
You’ll regularly be stopping the same getaways with the same few button presses (the button-mashing from previous games is mercifully largely gone) or stopping a break-in by battering the same few goons. Spider-Man 2, and to an extent all great Spider-Man stories, tackle themes of adolescence and puberty – a time of uncertainty for even the most normal of teenagers trying to control bodily fluids. We join Miles at this exact point in his life, with family ties straining, friendships facing fresh challenges, and life decisions of genuine importance being posed for the first time. Actor Nadji Jeter displays all the range needed for the role, continuing to excel as a younger Spider-Man maturing before our eyes. He’s in his early twenties so has already navigated the difficult years that Miles finds himself in, but thanks to the symbiote suit, he’s working his way through yet more bodily changes. Spider-Man 2 (PS5) brings back some of the old suits from the previous two games including news suits and outfits for this sequel from vintage suits to what-if scenario costumes.
Of course, Insomniac could’ve scrapped the entire wall due to their plans to keep Alexei alive, but if it was scrapped primarily due to design reasons, then Rhino could truly have been killed by Kraven the Hunter. After all, it makes sense for Kraven to hunt Rhino as he is much more akin to Kraven’s desire to hunt “beasts.” Despite many fans banding together and begging Insomniac to redo the famous scene in which Symbiote Spider-Man yells at Shocker when chasing him down (“Get back here Shocker!”).
Outside of the likes of Venom, Kraven, and Lizard seen in the trailers, Insomniac has kept many more cards hidden up its sleeve. I won’t even hint at any of these except to say that Spider-Man 2 opens with a bang, offering up a sense of scale not previously seen in the series. It’s an adrenaline-fuelled reintroduction to the series that tests how well you remember the combat, as well as providing a few new tricks.
